A modest, luminous church in Vagharshapat whose Armenian name means "drop of light" — a listed cultural heritage monument of Armenia.
A church called drop of light
Shoghakat Church stands in Vagharshapat, the holy city the world knows as Echmiadzin. Its name in Armenian means roughly "a drop of light" or "flowing light" — a quiet, poetic title for a quiet building. It is a recognised cultural heritage monument of Armenia, part of the dense weave of sacred sites that gathers around the country's spiritual centre.

Sevanavank on the peninsula, a lakeside lunch with ishkhan trout, then forested Dilijan, Goshavank and the old part of town.
Smaller, and all the warmer for it
Next to the famous churches of Echmiadzin, Shoghakat is modest in scale, and that is its charm. It feels less like a monument to be ticked off than a place to step into for a moment of stillness, where the light through the windows lives up to the name carved into its history.

A three-day journey through southern Armenia. A night in Goris, visits to Khndzoresk and the cave churches. One of the country’s most striking routes.
Not every great church is grand — some simply hold the light.
Before you go

A one-day food tour: the Areni-1 cave with 6,100-year-old winemaking artefacts, a tasting at a family winery, and lunch by the red cliffs of Noravank.
Shoghakat sits on the open Armavir plain near Echmiadzin, where summer sun is strong and shade is in short supply. Check the forecast for the nearest point before you set out — Armenian weather can shift quickly, and a bright morning can turn hot by midday.
From Yerevan to this place a car or transfer is the most convenient — public transport reaches most Armenian places rarely. Plan a day for the road plus at least half a day for the place itself.
