A monastery on the cliff

Kobayr is a medieval Armenian monastery in the Lori region of northern Armenia, set high on a cliff above the Debed canyon. One of the area's most striking monastic sites, it gathers churches and chapels into an ensemble that seems to grow straight out of the rock.

Though partly ruined, Kobayr keeps its atmosphere: arches, weathered walls and surviving wall paintings hint at the artistry that once filled the complex. The position above the gorge gives the whole place a dramatic, almost suspended quality.

Half ruin, half revelation: Kobayr clings to the cliff above the Debed.

How to get there

From Yerevan to this place a car or transfer is the most convenient — public transport reaches most Armenian places rarely. Plan a day for the road plus at least half a day for the place itself.
