Syunik's mountain capital

Kapan is the largest town in Syunik, set in the valley of the Voghji River at the foot of Mount Khustup. It is Armenia's southern gateway, where a mining town meets the green slopes of the Zangezur Mountains.

Kapan stretches along the valley of the Voghji River at around 910 metres, hemmed in by the ridges of the Zangezur Mountains. Rising above the town is Khustup, more than 3,200 metres high, a snow-capped peak visible from almost everywhere. The surrounding slopes are covered in dense forest, so even in the heat of summer the air feels cooler here than down on the plain.

The site's history reaches back to the 5th century, and in medieval times Kapan was the capital of the Kingdom of Syunik, flourishing around the 11th century. The area is tied to Davit Bek, who led a liberation struggle from nearby fortresses in the early 18th century. Today the town lives mainly from mining, extracting copper and other metals.

For travellers, Kapan makes a handy base for exploring southern Armenia and the Syunik region: Vahanavank monastery and Halidzor fortress lie nearby, while the town itself is about 316 km from Yerevan along mountain roads. Since 2023 the Syunik airport has been working again, linking Kapan to the capital with flights over the ridges.
