What is this place

Bandivan is a small mountain village in northwestern Armenia, in Shirak Province, near the Amasia community. It sits at around 1,940 metres, where the winters are harsh and the air carries an alpine clarity.

Bandivan lies in one of the highest and coldest corners of Armenia. Shirak Province and neighbouring Amasia are known for the most frigid and snow-heavy winters in the country. The village stands at roughly 1,940 metres above sea level, not far from the valley of the Akhurian River, on an open upland where the eye rests only on the soft lines of the mountains and the sky.

Today around 259 people live in Bandivan, a typical small Armenian village whose population has shrunk noticeably over the past century. Earlier censuses recorded far more residents here, but the history of the twentieth century and the drift toward the cities have left only a small community holding on to its land and its familiar rural way of life.

The village's main visible landmark is the Surb Astvatsatsin church (the Holy Mother of God), a modest stone building around which local life still turns. For the traveller, Bandivan is interesting precisely for its quiet: this is not a tourist hub but an honest mountain village of Shirak, where you can feel the rhythm of the Armenian backcountry.
