What is this place

Akhurik is a small village in Armenia's Shirak Province, on the bank of the Akhurian River right by the border with Turkey and not far from Gyumri. Around 1,243 people live here at roughly 1,470 metres above sea level.

Akhurik sits in the western part of Shirak, on the broad Shirak plain crossed by the border river Akhurian. The village took its present name in 1935, having earlier been known as Karakilisa (Karakilisa Turki). Life here is quiet and rural: fields and kitchen gardens, potato plots and irrigation channels spread in every direction, while the line of the Turkish frontier is visible on the horizon.

The Gyumri–Kars railway runs through Akhurik, and it carries a curious chapter of history. A station was built here with a rare facility for changing rail-car bogies, meant to move trains from the Soviet broad gauge to the European narrow gauge. The structure was finished almost on the eve of the USSR's collapse, but with the Armenian-Turkish border closed it never went into service and stands as a silent monument to plans that never came true.

Today Akhurik is part of the Akhuryan community and remains a quiet border village of Shirak Province. It is worth a stop for travellers curious about the real, unvarnished rural Armenia near the frontier, with its Shirak fields, unhurried pace and views of the Akhurian River.
