What is this place

Aghvorik is a small village in Armenia's Shirak Province, set on a mountain plateau at around 2,050 metres, some 27 km north of Gyumri and a few kilometres from Lake Arpi. About 89 people live here, surrounded by the windswept meadows and pastures of the Amasia highlands.

Aghvorik sits in one of the highest and coolest corners of Shirak, within the Amasia municipality, on an open plateau where summers stay fresh and winters are long and snowy. This is a land of wide horizons: rolling meadows, distant ridges, and the nearby presence of Lake Arpi, lying 8–9 km to the west at the heart of its namesake national park. Village life has always rested on land and livestock, with locals raising cattle, growing grain, and tending a few frost-hardy orchards.

The village carries a long history of names: until 1935 it was called Gharanamas, then bore the name Yeni Yol ("new road"), and finally took its present Armenian name, Aghvorik, in 1991. Some of the ancestors of today's residents resettled here from Western Armenia as far back as 1828–1830. In the twentieth century the population rose past a thousand, but after the upheavals of the late 1980s it fell sharply, and today Aghvorik is a quiet, sparsely populated village.

What makes this area special is its antiquity. Near Aghvorik, archaeologists found early Acheulean stone tools in Early Pleistocene deposits, placing human traces here in the deepest past. Later monuments are known nearby too, including the Berd Sar cemetery and fortress. For the traveller, Aghvorik is above all highland silence, the clear air of the plateau, and the closeness of the protected lake landscapes of Arpi.
