The present name, Vardadzor, comes from the words 'vard', rose, and 'dzor', gorge. The village stands on the slopes above the western shore, by a mountain gorge.
People keep livestock, sow potatoes and grain, and fish by the water. All around lie mountains and the surface of Sevan. The chief wealth of the slopes is mountain pastures.
